Republicans furious over $24,000 “amnesty bonuses” for illegal immigrants

Republicans on the Hill are flabbergasted after learning illegal immigrants can now file taxes with the IRS and, in some cases, receive refunds topping $24,000.
Republicans on Capitol Hill are fuming after the revelation that illegal immigrants will be able to file tax returns with impunity, and in some cases, receive tax refunds topping $24,000. While GOP members scoffed at the notion of providing “amnesty bonuses,” the IRS claims the process is confidential and will remain in place.
“We don’t enforce the Social Security laws, we don’t enforce the immigration laws,” said IRS commissioner John Koskinen during a House oversight committee hearing. “In fact, the reason illegal immigrants file taxes with us is they know we aren’t sharing that data with anybody. We treat it as taxpayer-protected information.”
Koskiken insisted that the IRS was not simply giving away money to illegal immigrants, but rather those filing taxes are subject to the scurtiny of the agency and must to follow a series of protocols and provide documentations just as every other taxpayer does.
“If you get a Social Security number, you can then file for this year if you’re working, and if you earned income in the three years before that and filed, you’ll be eligible,” said Koskinen. “You have to do the same thing any taxpayer would do, which is you’re going to file a return, say this is what I earned, these are my expenses, deductions, whatever it might be. You have to have the supporting documentation.”
However, Congressional GOP members do not quite see it that way. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said there was “no legal or moral justification” for the agency to approve tax refunds, which can reach upwards of $6,000 for families with more than three children.
“These are not tax ‘refunds’ but direct, free cash payments from the U.S. treasury to low-income illegal immigrants who owe no taxes,” said Sessions. “It is a dramatic cash transfer from lawful residents to unlawful residents, required by the president’s imperial amnesty.”
Under President Obama’s new executive order, illegal immigrants will now be able to apply for social security numbers, which will not only allow them to access federal aid programs and eventually enroll into the Social Security and Medicare systems, but also file back taxes for the past three years to take advantage of federal refunds.
“The administration may have blown open the doors for fraud with amnesty bonuses of more than $24,000 to those who receive deferred action,” said Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE). “This program severely undermines the White House’s lip-service to enforcing the law and would increase the burden on law-abiding taxpayers.”
